Craftsmanship of Felt

There are two major felt making methods:
The Wet Felt method is the old classic way whereby natural fibers like wool are interlocked and matted together through a process of felting and fulling (milling) by exposing the wool to heat, motion pressure and moisture in the form of hot steam and water. In that process the natural scale structure of the wool fibers open up and allow for fiber entanglement. Such interlocking and shrinkage is continued until a desired density is achieved.

The Needle Felt method in contrast is a dry process (no water and steam) that does not require natural fibers like wool in order to interlock. The interlocking of fibers is achieved through a mechanical up and downward motion of metal needles with barbs that transport and push the fibers together into a matted form.

Wool felt fabric is the most common type of felt produced from wool fibers, primarily from sheep wool. It's also the oldest form of felt. As it's made of natural raw materials, it's environmentally friendly. This wool fabric is popular for clothing, and toys for kids.

 

Acrylic felt, the typical felt fabric you find in craft stores, is made from synthetic fibers. This makes acrylic fabric not so environmentally friendly as it's non-biodegradable. It means that it contributes to plastic pollution when discarded. Acrylic felt is popular among crafters for its lower price.

 

Wool blend felt is commonly used in crafting. This felt is a blend of wool (20-35%) and rayon (80-65%) fibers. Blended wool felt is produced to provide some of the look and feel of wool felt fabric but at a lower price. It has better quality than acrylic felt.

 

Rayon felt is a fabric made from semi-synthetic fibers. It's commonly used in medical and industrial applications. It substitutes cotton, or wool in certain clothing. IIt's not that environmentally friendly as this felt production requires extensive chemical processing.

 

Needled felt is produced without the inclusion of moisture; instead, thousands of needles are used in the production. The felt fibers are intertwined with the needles, and this process is called needling.

A: S.A.E. F-5, F-6 and F-7 are high-to-medium grade felts recommended for precision uses where resiliency and durability are important factors. SAE F-7 can be used in applications similar to those for F-5, but where slightly less durable material is permissible.

The outer skeleton of each fiber is made up of the overlapping scales. When heat and moisture is introduced, the scales on the fibers raise and open up. The agitation then interlocks the fibers as the scales hook into one another to form a strong, resilient bond.
